A fairly thorough overview of the history of comic book heroines, but the overall tone is often condescending, and the author makes negative judgments of celebrities' appearances and (percieved) morality, as well as the (in his view) strident unpleasantness of the more overtly feminist characters. Note that I am making an effort to avoid repeating his sometimes derogatory language.

In spite of some lip service paid to the concept of feminism, the author neither seems particularly fond of it nor to really understand it. Sexist and racist themes in the works he describes go largely unexamined, and he could have stood to more thoroughly explore the censorship of the Comics Code Authority.

Read it for the intriguing historical overview, not for the analysis, and only if you feel up to slogging through the author's own sexist remarks.

Where else in this period, 1940-1965, would a 12 year-old boy see so much female skin?

I found this book to be interesting and intriguing, if also frustrating because of the evidence of sexism in this country. Mostly it was a fun and educational read.

I really liked this book. It gives you exactly what you would expect and more. Mike is funny but drags on a bit, but it just shows how dedicated he is. Worth reading.
