This volume presents 100 of these little-known works, many reproduced for the first time. Although some objects were made for Native use, many reflect the interaction of Native Americans with other cultures, and demonstrate a mastery of new materials and techniques in weaving, silversmithing, beadwork and other crafts. An introductory essay traces the history of Native American art at the MFA since the late nineteenth century, which mirrors cultural shifts in attitude toward these objects in the United States as a whole. Covering a diversity of objects from across the North American continent—from the eastern and southern Woodlands to the Northwest Pacific Coast, with a particular emphasis on the Southwest—this latest volume in the MFA Highlights series demonstrates the vast richness of American Indian art.
The 100 color images presented in this slim volume are highlights selected from the extensive collection of Native American artwork housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Pieces range from ancient to contemporary and come from all corners of the North American continent. The volume is divided into six parts, the first devoted to modern Native American artwork, and the rest according to the geographic area in which the pieces originated. An introductory essay describing the region and its tribes precedes each section and descriptive text accompanies the high quality images. Ward, one of the museum's curators contributes a short history of the collection, noting that most works were acquired as gifts. The volume contains a map of North America as well as suggestions for further reading. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
