I agree that Vortex definitely advances the story further than the previous novels in this series.
I'm surprisingly finding myself actually really liking the novels that Troy Denning wrote in this series. There's no unnecessary innuendos he liked to add in his other books, and I think he, more than the other two authors, gets the character's personalities spot on.
This book had a really strong start, but I started getting a little confused toward the end when it started to feel like things were getting skipped or just weren't clear.

Vortex brings in a fair amount of action, where it seemed to lag in the previous few editions of FOTJ.
