Crockpot Cooking

If you are like me, cooking a good meal is something I do not have the time to do on a regular basis.  So, I rely on my crockpot a lot.  I love the ease of putting ingredients together in a pot and the flavors melding together and simmering into a delicious meal. To get ideas for these meals, I use slow cooker cookbooks that I check out at the East Lansing Public Library.  My two favorite slo… (more)

Being anal retentive with slow cooker recipes defeats the purpose of using a slow cooker. I didn't come away using any new recipes.

My favorite slow cooker cookbook so far! Great instructions and tasty recipes.

I was pleasantly surprised at the 200 recipes in this cookbook and America's Test Kitchen has done it again. Anyone should be able to use this cookbook and produce meals that make people happy.
I've always liked the idea of tossing ingredients into a crock pot and then magically something good comes out. I will say that most meals prepared in a crock pot are less than stellar, but the ones in this book were successful.

One of the tips that seems simple, but gives lots of impact is adding some soy sauce and tomato paste makes a really meaty flavor -- added bonus you won't have to brown the meat if you don't want to.

Give this one a try and enjoy some simplified cooking.

The recipes in the book turn out pretty tasty but this is NOT a slow cooker cookbook where you can just dump all of the ingredients into the slow-cooker and be finished. On the contrary, there is quite a bit of prep work involved for the majority-- such as browning meats, aromatics and vegetables before adding to the slow cooker.

Three solid stars for flavor and the guarantee that the end result will be delicious. If you are a busy parent, it may not be the right cookbook for you, as some of the preparation is quite involved.

I wasn't inspired by this book, the majority of the recipes require a lot of prep work, which defeats part of the purpose of a slow cooker in my opinion.

I tried several recipes from this cookbook and they all turned out very well. I loved using the microwave for shortening the prep time. You really can't expect good results when you just throw everything in the crockpot and let it go any more than you could with a Dutch oven. The extra prep time really pays off in flavour.

I was hoping for more recipes from Asia, India, the middle east.

For all the hype of this book, I was pretty disappointed. Most of the recipes require a tonne of prep, and those that don't use the microwave for shortcuts. I'm really surprised by the amount of microwave use in this book.
I didn't find this book had a lot of variety at all. There are maybe three vegetarian recipes, and no seafood at all. Since I don't eat red meat, I'm not impressed by the overwhelming amount of pork, beef and lamb recipes.
I gave it two stars, rather than one, because it has good chicken recipes.

Plenty of variety under several food categories. Several enticed me.
