Some people like to post two comments. I like to post one. Excellent book, by the way. I may not agree 100% with Mr. Mamet, but he has very good points and knows how to make them. And the fact that he is a "white guy" has no relevancy here. Read a judge for yourself.
Ivory tower dweller Mamet, writer of juicy dialog(check out Glengarry Glen Ross, pausing often to let the brilliance of the wordplay(words as brickbats - fire away!) wash over you...) decides, at long last, that he is dissatisfied...and chooses a safe target to be his whipping-post - which will make him the darling of the crowd he hangs with as he marches on into elderly dementia(as opposed to whatever dementia owns him now). Christopher Hitchens said once he became a journalist so he wouldn't have to depend on corporate-owned media to get his information; he travelled widely and got his data at the source, so it was difficult to fool him, because he did his homework and also read voraciously. For Mamet to whine about the mass-media being liberally biased means he is admitting to being mentally lazy and believing the media swill that is designed by the corporate owners to be a smokescreen, a false zeitgeist for the brainwashed masses to believe in while they, the almost impossibly rich microscopic minority do whatever they want. This book is almost unreadable as Mr. Mamet twists logic until he's comfortable with his mewlings - it's almost comical, except that he will do a lot of damage with this book - he's considered brilliant because of his movie scripts and lots of people will be guided by what he has to say and will be led astray. The old Show-business saying, People don't know what they like, they like what they know has worked for Bill ORielly and Rush Limbaugh and Mamet is in show-biz, too. If anyone actually reads these reviews, try being an autodidact and thinking for yourself.
Is Mamet related to Ben Stein?
I am looking forward to reading his book again. I think reading and being educated regarding both sides of an argument is the only way to understand it's real desired outcome. The left as noted by those below making negative comments are used to demonizing or trying to destroy those whose disagree with their motives especially when it is one of their former own. Liberals are the true destroyers of what good this country stands for, which they rather choose to destroy with their blather. For they have the time while not working to produce anything of real value. God bless their trust funds and Mommies.
Not many can boast that after so many years on the wrong side (read “Left”) someone finally sees the light and goes to the right side--read, of course, “Right”! Mr. Mamet did just that: he realized he was wrong and courageously went against the left-wing media and his left-wing supporters turned against him like rabid dogs (as one can see right here). Welcome to the Light, Mr. Mamet! (I highly suggest NappimusMaximii follows his own advice for a change...)
First notice the title,THE SECRET.Just another very wealthy white guy who can't see the poverty around him for what it really is namely the corporate destruction of the working class.GREAT PLAYWRITE but a lousy sociologist/economist.Nice pseudo Hemingway pose on the cover though.
// 'the government' commit sixty years of fairly unrelieved and catastrophic error nationally and internationally, that I not only hated every wasted hard-earned cent I spent in taxes, but the trauma and misery the produced \\ Fortunately, I've never cared for Mamet so I have never read his stuff, no doubt considering him to be quite the lowbrow, which he has now unequivocally proven. No, Mamet, you are just getting older & richer, stingier and suffering from hardening of those woebegone brain arteries [atherosclerosis, sonny]. Missed the part where you served in the US military, discharged your citizenship duties, or is that only for the goyim, dude?
You remind me of all those American Jews who avoided military service but then complained that the US didn't somehow miraculously go in and rescue all the Jews [and Roma, et cetera] from Hitler's death camps! Join your Nazi-Jewish buddy, Henry Kissinger, I'm sure he'll welcome your swill! [Had you ever read anything serious in your self-serving life, like the congressional investigations into the Rockefellers, du Ponts, Morgans, Mellons and Ford, after WWII, and various GAO reports over the past 40 years, and David Talbot's outstanding books, especially The Devil's Chessboard, you might have an inkling of what you called error to be by design, sonny!]
Has Mamet gone off the rails ? Some claim it started with Speed the Plow or Oleanna. Some say he develops through oppositional stances. Some say the conclusions land awkwardly where the assumptions started. These opinion pieces doodle with veils, leap canyons, levitate and bait and switch without bothering the facts. Unless you think barking in chorus buys you up, give this one a wide pass. Try his better books, Five Cities of Refuge, Handbook for the Actor.
Simplistic claptrap. Mamet's a great writer of fiction & drama, but he's no economist and his cultural criticism is hamfisted. If you're interested in his economic arguments, go to Sowell and Hayek, who originated them.
