If you have ever been at all curios about the history of modern-day shoplifting - Then - "The Steal" (written by Rachel Shteir) is definitely the very book that you'll want to consult on the subject.

As I'm sure you're gonna find this a real surprise - Shoplifting transcends all cultures and all income brackets where the rich, as well as the poor, regularly indulge in a little bit of "5-Finger-Discount" in order to help spice up their everyday lives.

OK. Let's be completely honest about shoplifting, folks. My guess is that we've all been guilty of committing this petty crime at least once in our lifetime, justifying it for whatever reason.

Competently written by Rachel Shteir - This often-intriguing book of non-fiction takes an in-depth look at not only the history of shoplifting - But also at how really widespread it is today where (believe it, or not) even the wealthy folks go in for a bit of the old "Five-Finger-Discount" every once in a while.

Anyway - "The Steal" is a book that certainly doesn't condone shoplifting for any reason - But it sure does give you some solid insight into this worldwide, cross-cultural trend that has been going on since ancient times and there still seems to be no end to it in sight.
