With dozens of alphabet books on the market, finding a fresh and unique one proves difficult. But Paul Thurlby nails his subject matter right from the cover image of a cheery boy with a scarlet A-shaped body waving the reader in. "A" certainly stands for awesome!

Each letter gets its own page; both upper and lower case letters appear against a solid colored background and the artist shows the uppercase one embedded in or transformed by design. Some descriptors seem too obvious (D for dog) but others have a quirky edge (Z for zippy, F for fierce). The pages contain small drawn-in scuff marks and bits of colour in odd places, giving a nice patina and enhancing the vintage-type style of the book.

Fun for the eyes of little kids and big ones alike!
