I met Duff and Slash as they wandered aimlessly in the downstairs lobby of the Edmonton Convention Centre in the summer of 1987. They were the opening act for The Cult, and they showed little indication that they were only a few years away from being the biggest band in the world (A year earlier, I saw Bon Jovi open for Judas Priest, and it was clear BJ were going places). To speak to him, Duff was no different from any other obnoxious yahoo you would meet in a Heavy Metal Parking Lot. This book shows an amazing transformation into someone who confronted his behaviour, got clean, learned a challenging skill outside music, and started - and still has - a family. Along with Neil Peart, he has become hard rock's Renaissance Man.

The only problem now is that he hasn't recorded a really strong album in a long time! So we are left with a disturbing question: do you really have to have a chaotic life to produce good rock?

A highly satisfying read, especially for anyone who lived through that crazy era of bush parties, chicks with big hair and spray-on jeans and opening beer bottles with your teeth, and now wants to reflect on when he finally decided to get serious about life.

Loved seeing his reminiscences about the old Seattle scene. The way he powered through and past his addictions was inspiring. Not a fan of most of his music but loved Ten Minute Warning way back when.

Wow! I was blown away by this book. No, not because I was thinking dumb rock star that blew it to only get a second chance. This book was a lot more than that! As a budding bassist / hobbyist I was drawn to this book on a lot of levels, and being a GNR fan was just one of many. Duff writes in a very natural voice that was refreshing and original. It was a fascinating account of what someone who is driven and an artist will have to go through. I liked all the stories, the interactions, and how he put the blame clearly on his own shoulders. But, surprisingly, he is very humble, and perhaps does not give enough credit to himself. Without having met him, I see that he is not only a first rate rock star, but more importantly a great dad, loving husband, intelligent analytical finance writer, and a wonderful human being! I have recommended this book to everyone who has asked about books, or anytime there is a conversation that would enlighten some people. I love how the punk rock ethos still comes through to this very day!

Magnifico1969 I know Axl is a fry short of a happy meal but it's kind of harsh calling him a lunatic.

Duff McKagan, the bassist for Guns and Roses survived being the resident alcoholic in G & R, as well as dealing with the lunatic that calls himself Axl Rose. Maybe the most kindred spirit with Axl, as both had psychological problems, eventually even he had to leave for his sanity. I respect him for going back to school and getting an accounting degree, as well as being clean for 15 years. I also read Steven Adler's book and am waiting for Slash's book.
One thing is certain,: That Axl Rose is very talented as a singer and puts out 110% when he does show up, but his lunacy should not have been tolerated by other band members, or any fans that are left. The time I saw Guns and Roses and Soundgarden at the San Diego Sports Arena in the early 90's, Soundgarden were finished with their set at 9:00p.m., but G & R did not come on till almost midnight, on a Weekday Night!
Anyway, cheers for Duff and continued good karma!
