I took this book out of the library because I thought it was going to be about genealogy. It isn't. It's a memoir -- a sometimes gruesome one. Despite the violence the author grew up with, she didn't learn to see herself as a victim. Fortunately, she had one or two male relatives' unconditional love, and from them she learned to value herself. Also, her mother's constant role model as perpetual victim and persecutor showed the author what she did NOT want to become. Against all odds, Myers has apparently succeeded. I wish her well.
