It’s 1936, and Rachel’s family is struggling through the Great Depression like everyone else. After Pop loses his job at the bank, 12-year-old Rachel is devastated to learn they must move away from the city to a small town where he’s promised a job. That means leaving all that is familiar, but especially Miss Mitzi who owns the florist’s shop and has been a surrogate mother to Rachel since she was young. Worse, once they’ve moved and settled into a ramshackle farmhouse, the job disappears and Pop must leave Rachel and her younger brother and sister on their own while he goes in search of work. Rachel, who shares a love of words and letter-writing with Miss Mitzi, must grow up quickly and leave behind games such as “A my name is Alice and my husband’s name is Albert…..” A charming and hopeful story with rich details.
