This is an intricately plotted police procedural set in Ireland with an engaging "hero", cop Mike Mulcahy. The relationships between he and his team form the heart of the story as they try to figure out a complicated drug smuggling ring as the bodies pile up. He has a past relationship with a reporter, Siobhan Fallon (see the previous book) & she again becomes involved as a story she is chasing intersects with his investigation. There are some leaps of faith required as it's hard to believe any cop would allow a reporter so close to a case & her character is a bit annoying at times as she makes some truly dumb decisions while being portrayed as a smart, savvy woman. As in the last book, her involvement almost causes Mike to lose his job & you'd think he would start to see he should avoid her like the plague.
