A very entertaining memoir. Deford (not DeFord, as he wistfully bemoans) writes about his life as a sportswriter, other sportswriters and sports personages he has met and written about. His writing style is very personal, often funny and laced with sentences that cause you to stop and savor them. This was the first thing of Deford's I'd ever read, and I now plan to read lots more of him.

This is a superb autobiography by one of America's finest sports journalists and commentators (National Public Radio). Deford, a long-time writer for Sports Illustrated, is insightful, humorous and a highly literate observer of America and its sporting life.
