A kinda bad parody of Beckett. One never knows who is speaking, since there is no indication thereof; its all dialogue - no description, no narration, no 'he said' - a partially finished script. It would probably make a better mini-series on film.

I hugely enjoyed Padgett Powell's previous novel, "The Interrogative Mood". It was composed entirely of questions. So I came to "You & Me" with high expectations. If it's not quite as consistently brilliant as "TIM", it's still an endlessly amusing back-porch ramble consisting of nothing more than the aimless conversation of two aimless old codgers who would like to be more than they are but can't quite work up the resolve to get out of their rocking chairs. You might think a portrait of washed-up humanity would be depressing, but Powell's "weirdly agreeable old dudes" have enough flaky wit and Southern charm to keep us amused and involved right to the end. Powell is a genius, and in his hands experimental fiction is as compulsively readable as a best-selling thriller.
