"You only think you know this story. In 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer, the most notorious serial killer since Jack the Ripper, seared himself into the American consciousness. To the public, Dahmer was a monster who committed unthinkable atrocities. To Derf Backderf, 'Jeff' was a much more complex figure: a high school friend with whom he had shared classrooms, hallways, and car rides. In [this story], a haunting and original graphic novel, writer-artist Backderf creates a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a disturbed young man struggling against the morbid urges emanating from the deep recesses of his psyche-- a shy kid, a teenage alcoholic, and a goofball who never quite fit in with his classmates. With profound insight, what emerges is a Jeffrey Dahmer that few ever really knew, and one readers will never forget."

I couldn't decide if I wanted to rate this 5 stars because it disturbed me or 1 star for the same reason. Parts of this graphic novel had me cringing and parts had me shaking my head in disbelief that the circumstances allowed this trouble teen to slip through all the cracks. The author asks multiple times why didn't a teacher or guidance counselor step in and while it wouldn't have healed Dahmer, it could have saved some of his victims. Disturbing but great graphic novel!

oftentimes hard to take but still compelling. not for the faint of heart though. many of the graphic details are in the appendix. still interesting as it gives a rare story of someone who knew a murderer "way back when"

A deeply unsettling but fascinating must-read. Bear in mind that it doesn't go into the details of the crimes for which Dahmer is best known, so you may want to do a little research before or after you read this.
