I was excited to pick up this book. Many great hikes and backpacks are included in the pages along with enough photographs to qualify as a "coffee table book". As a long time backpacker, I especially approved of the dual rating system in which each trip is accorded both a "physical" as well as a "psychological" numerical value from 1 to 5. While no one ever questions the need to know how hard phyically a particular trip may be, far too often the psychological impact and investment is overlooked.
I did note one error of fact (which could have been easily avoided by better fact checking) on a Montana trip which cites the highest mountain in the state as Mount Gardner (pg 98), when in fact at 12,799' it is Granite Peak .
I would hardily recommend this book to everyone- old hands, beginners and non- hikers alike. Who knows- you may be inspired to take a hike! (sorry I could not resist).
