A good informative book on an obscure American president, from a Canadian perspective, along for the ride is pre-Civil, Civil and post- Civil War history. An interesting time. And given what is happening in the U.S. today is still prescient.

After reading this well written, in-depth, biography on Hiram Ulysses Grant -or as many know him, Ulysses S. Grant -I've come to appreciate what he had done for our country. After taking this journey with H.W. Brands, you'll find yourself wondering, "how come we're not taught more about U.S. Grant as children?" If you read one biography this year, make it this one!
