This is a highly engaging, suspenseful story that deals with a whole host of hot-button, relevant issues. The best thing about it is that it considers these issues much more through the thoughts, actions, and feelings of its characters than through preaching messages. These are complicated characters with complicated motives and perspectives, and they feel realistically teen. Unfortunately, it shows that this is a debut author still improving at her craft, as much of what should have been sharp came across as fuzzy and muddled. Though the idea was there, the execution could have been stronger. Still, I think teen readers will find unmuddled appeal that will have them questioning some of their assumptions even as they are entertained.
