Parrots can learn to talk, but do they understand what they’re saying? Irene Pepperberg is convinced that Alex, an African grey parrot, not only knew what he was saying, but could use language as people do. Illus. with watercolor.

Think Dr. Dolittle! I feel the brief description here does not begin to do this book justice. Alex was famous world-wide and appeared several times on tv. Alex changed the scientific assessment of avian intelligence. Alex opened the possibility that certain birds--birds!-- may rank at the very top of the animal intelligence scale. Alex shattered the long-held scientific "truth" that parrots are like mere "tape recorders" when they speak. He proved that parrots can be profoundly more than mere mimics of human speech. Alex had personality. And Alex's mentor, Irene Pepperberg, was a Harvard PhD. in theoretical chemistry. She at one time had an MIT "genius grant." Her uphill struggle to get her data scientifically recognized (rather than laughed at) is a story in itself, a glimpse for young readers of the hard work and dedication required of top-tier scientists. Animals, famous animals, animals communicating with humans in human language, animals with character, emotions, and personality--the subject should be intensely interesting to most, if not all, children.
