HARPERCOLL

With Second Watch, New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance delivers another thought-provoking novel of suspense starring Seattle investigator J. P. Beaumont.

Second Watch shows Beaumont taking some time off to get knee replacement surgery, but instead of taking his mind off work, the operation plunges him into one of the most perplexing mysteries he's ever faced.

His past collides with his present in this complex and thrilling story that explores loss and heartbreak, duty and honor, and, most importantly, the staggering cost of war and the debts we owe those who served in the Vietnam War, and those in uniform today.

Working on a cold case while "on leave" isn't Beaumont's usual, and I enjoyed it. Yes, it started off slowly, but give the guy a break. He's recovering from double knee replacement surgery. In reality, he would be a lot slower than he is shown to be. Knowing what surgery and post-surgery drugs do to one's brain, that part of the plot's not far fetched. I also appreciated his tribute to vets. I enjoy all Jance's series, but Beau's my favorite. They're a quick read, but always have meat and a moral point to them.

I used to love zipping through these J.P Beaumont novels, but this drifted off into slow-poke territory. Maybe because I've gravitated toward Daniel Silva, Alex Berenson, Robert Crais, and Micheal Connelly lately, Jance's pacing and characters seem pokey in comparison. It was disappointing because I've enjoyed her books so much in the past.
