"The master of action-adventure returns with the follow-up to his New York Times bestselling novel Those in Peril starring Hector Cross Wilbur Smith has won fans the world over for his heart-racing novels that span continents and centuries. For nearly fifty years, his books have hit bestseller lists in the United States --and everywhere else -- and sold millions of copies. As a writer of action-adventure and the African continent, Smith is without peer, and with Vicious Circle he is about to prove that he shows no signs of letting up on the gas pedal. His most recent bestseller, Those in Peril, launched a new contemporary series of thrillers that give Clive Cussler and Stephen Coonts a run for their money. Hero Hector Cross, a tough former soldier who has fought pirates and terrorists in the lawless waters off the coast of Africa, returns in another surefire bestseller. With film rights already acquired for Those in Peril, this new series promises to continue building on Wilbur Smith's history of blockbuster success"-- Provided by publisher.

Ugh. Written to sell to the mindless movie set I would guess. Difficult to tell the good guys from the bad sometimes and the dialog was often disappointing for a novelist of his caliber.

Vicious Circle: Love. Loss. Revenge. --- by --- Wilbur Smith
Having exhausted Smith’s Egyptian Novels, I thought it was time to move on and read some of his other novels. For no particular reason except that it was one of just a few Smiths on the shelf, I grabbed Circle for my week-beach-reading. Certainly this adult adventure action novel hits the spot if you have a hankering of sado-masochism, violence, sex, execution by a variety of methods, torture and deceit .At places it becomes downright vicious. I guess this is what puts the “adult” into adult entertainment. It speaks volumes that this is entertaining. Will I read Smith again? Hmmm.

Incredibly disappointing, this book is trash. Mr. Smith seems to have lost his ability to write. The original plot was viable but his piling on implausible garbage will surely turn off those who know him as a good author (Which he was) and sicken new readers

Wilber Smith has sunk to new low. This book is nothing but trash in every sense. I am not sure where is head is at these days but he needs to quit while he is ahead.

I do not think I can read this book any more . Will close this book as it is Overly "vicious", brutal and savage, inhumane and not like WB's earlier books. Sickens me.

I would generally agree with the previous comments. I have read every WS book, and the last 5 or so have had more misses than hits.
Taking into account my penchant for his books, it is safe to say my tolerance for sex & violence is high. However, I found one sequence in this book to be particularly revolting.
This will likely be my last Wilbur Smith read.

Wish I hadn't brought it home--should have read a few pages at the library. Smith's last few books have been much less interesting than his African sagas. This one reads like the work of an aspiring author who needs a lot more practice and a terrific editor. Too bad. Perhaps I will re-read the early works.

I have read many of Smith's books, but not all. I always respected him as a writer , but not after this book. Vicious Circle is indeed vicious. Over the top savagery, and gratuitous pornography and sex. Even violent sex. Strangely, very little profanity. I agree with the previous commenter who questioned that Smith actually wrote this book.

I have read most of Wilbur Smith's books and enjoyed them all, until Vicious Circle. I am a liberal and believe in freedom of the press, however, this book is extremely pornographic in details and extremely vile! I wonder what happened to Wilbur's mind, and doubt he even wrote this book. Even the ending brought up the question of how twisted is this man, really?

One of the few books I have not finished.
I found it had too much graphic violence - very atypical of his writing.
I have read many of his other books, but will stick to the Africa sagas. I won't be reading any future ones if this is the type he'll be writing.
