After reading Burg's (excellent) new release, 'Unbound', I wanted to try her earlier work as well. And this was even better than 'Unbound'. It's about a girl in Haiti who dreams of going to school so that she can one day become a doctor, and it is such a beautiful book. It hit home for me in particular since my dad, a photographer, traveled to Haiti frequently in my childhood to cover the political turmoil there, and this reminded me so much of his stories about the people he met there. This book is so sad (it made me cry! twice!) but ultimately hopeful as well, and I just loved it.
