"In Belfast, Northern Ireland, memories of the city's troubled history haunt every street corner, but for one tortured soul, the incredible violence in his past is also his most cherished legacy. Rea Carlisle--daughter of influential Stormont politician Graham Carlisle--has inherited a house from an uncle she never knew. It doesn't take her long to clear out the dead man's remaining possessions, but one of the upstairs rooms remains stubbornly locked. When Rea finally forces it open, she discovers inside a chair, a table, and a leather-bound book, its pages filled with a host of chilling mementos, locks of hair, fingernails: a catalogue of victims. Horrified, Rea wants to go straight to the police--but her father intervenes"-- Provided by publisher.

Formulaic and uninteresting. The lead character, Jack, is pathetic and whiny at most. The story doesn't even go into the best parts of the plot, but rather focuses on uninteresting aspects, much like a bad movie on Lifetime.

While I thought the story was good, I couldn't get past the formulaic nature of the story. I was able to blow through this book pretty quickly as the plot and characters are all straightforward. Full review of the book is here: http://671books.net/fiction/the-final-silence/

Stuart Neville has to work hard to live up to his "Ghosts of Belfast," and this latest effort doesn't make it. Jack has become whiney and self-indulgent and the book repetitious. Everything is blamed on everyone else, including things under his control. He loves his daughter, just not enough to meet her basic needs and he seems to relish in is incompetence.

The plot is contrived, and the remedies miraculous. If only everyone else would take responsiblity for him.

Neville said in his Acknowledgements that certain people helped him get through a bad patch in writing the book and you just wish that he would have taken that extra six months or so to get it right himself.
