A well structured, though necessarily brief run through of the history of jazz, focussing entirely on America, ignoring jazz as realized and developed elsewhere. It doesn't focus on the most famous people, or even the most famous styles (Dixieland is very briefly mentioned, Fusion not at all, and Bossa Nova (or Jazz Samba) has a small chapter devoted to it), and is mostly concerned about post-war jazz and is interspersed with modern performers.
