"'Eat smart, exercise regularly, and get routine health screenings,' the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services advises the public in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. And that is absolutely true--except for the checkup part. The American public has been sold the idea that seeking medical care is one of the most important steps to maintain wellness. However, surprisingly, medical care is not in fact well correlated with good health. The major determinants of health are outside individual medical care. Dr. Gilbert Welch pushes against established wisdom, and suggests that medical care may be too aggressive"-- Provided by publisher.

A very readable book that addresses inherent risks associated with health screening and aggressive medical interventions. More is not always better, something is not always better than nothing, early is not always better than later.

This is not quack medicine touting some new approach to health. This is a real look inside the current trend in US medicine of focusing on health screening, and the costs that individual patients assume in terms of anxiety, over-diagnosis, mis-directed interventions and unnecessary health risks. Are the cancers that we are finding early really significant? Are the interventions responsible for improved survival, or were the cancers NEVER going to cause any problems? Who knows?

This is heady material, and well worth considering. What is YOUR tradeoff in terms of quality versus quantity of life? Is living longer always the most attractive option? At what cost?
