Publishers' Weekly: From page one, where she writes "Lip-locking lovers perambulated... and holiday makers gathered... under Maxfield Parrish skies," it is evident that Checkoway's ability to set a scene is uncanny and accomplished.

Is this history? or an old-time gossip column? Way too much minutiae for my taste.

In the tradition of The Boys in the Boat, this book provides a detailed contextual narrative of a little know story in American and world athletic history. A fine combination of personal anecdotes from rich research into the lives and activities those who participated in the saga, the author weaves global events into the life stories of those famous remembered and forgotten. A good and sometimes exciting read, worth it for history and sports enthusiasts.
