Published by Seattle’s own Mountaineers Books, this is one of the most visually beautiful volumes I’ve ever seen. Written in conjunction with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the book opens with a foreward by novelist and biologist, Barbara Kingsolver.

At first glance, you might peg this volume as a coffee table book, but it’s much more than that. The photographs are unbelievable and the beauty of the birds included makes even a couch potato want to don binoculars and head for parts unknown to see these magnificent creatures. From the smallest warbler to the most amazing camouflaged owl, the reader is enchanted by the photos and at the same time, gently educated in the environmental perils that threaten these avian wonders (and us!) by respected naturalists, ornithologists and ecology-minded experts who have written the various chapters.

Well worth the wait on the holds list!
