"The vicious nonchalance with which [animals] are slaughtered," is a phrase from the reviewer in Publishers Weekly, and it is so very apt. My meat-eating friends like to pretend that in this enlightened age we have learned not to be cruel to animals and so it must follow that farm animals are well treated. They seem to believe this, even without any evidence at all. This book, however, provides overwhelming evidence that no where on the planet are farm animals treated well, including so-called organic and family farms. The "vicious nonchalance" towards farm and ranch animals is everywhere, and at every stage of the animals' miserable lives, right up to their hideous deaths. The worst treated, perhaps, are chickens; I think about that every time I see ads for eating chicken, the most-consumed animal in the US. There is nothing humane about any of it, at any place along the process. I won't explain it here, since this is a review, but I urge you to read this book. And no -- because I know some readers will wonder -- I have not eaten any animals for many decades. For those who wonder if they could ever give up eating animals, I assure you, you can, even if you don't read this book. But reading it should surely help.
Shocking, and deeply disturbing, if this book doesn't make you give up factory farmed supermarket meat, chicken and dairy products forever, nothing will. The treatment of farm animals, including dairy cows, described in this book is appalling, and most of the research was carried out at so-called family farms in the Toronto area.
