As much as I have read but have steered clear of the Great Gatsby, I think that may be why the book fell on good ground with me. I agree with the weak characterization and dialogue comments below, but I would definitely say enough going on in the plot to keep you page turning. I'm always startled with encounters of depicting mental illness, so this one had me going until the end. I was disappointed somewhat but I was also glad that Bohjalian was able to show progressives in stages of mental illness journeys. Found through the Chapel Hill Summer Book Reading Challenge.

Very interesting yet slightly disturbing.

I usually love his books but this one was headed for a pretty obvious story line right from chapter one.

I knew nothing about Bohjalian or this novel before picking it up. It's not bad. Despite the fact that the characterization and dialogue aren't really very good -- and important elements of the plot are wildly implausible (particularly the book's central premise, which involves the now-discredited notion of memory-suppression) -- the book is engrossing and even, at times, moving.

It helps to have at least a Coles Notes understanding of The Great Gatsby.
