"It takes a condition that we have all thought about historically, politically and even dramatically and makes us actually feel it and live it. That's a serious achievement."--San Francisco Chronicle

Yes the story is powerful and moving, but the star and director of the show is a rapist in real life. I couldn't get past that while watching the movie. He put a rape scene in the moving, knowing he did that to someone in real life. I am giving 4 stars for the others, Nate Parker is a zero.

and like someone else wrote.... this movie had so much potential! It was the highest bought movie in Sundance history and it could have been an Oscar darling, but horrendous behavior by the director/star of the movie ruined everything for those involved in the production.

A very GOOD movie.

A seriously damaged and inadequate movie ... its defects reveal traits of character-arrogance, vanity, and self-importance-that exert an unfortunately strong influence on Parker's directorial choices.

A pretentious and poorly made biopic, The Birth of a Nation lacks passion and focus.

Directed by Nate Parker, this is a 2016 American period docudrama, based on the story of Nat Turner, the enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831.
The near 48-hour rebellion resulted in the deaths of over 60 slave-holding family members, evoking fear throughout the country.
In retariation, hundreds of Africans, both enslaved and free, were murdered.
Nat Turnet's body was flayed and dismembered, his skin sewan into relics, his flesh churned into wagon grease, all in hope of preventing a legacy.
It is an emotionally charged anti-racism epic---one of the greatest depictions of the unjust treatments and struggles of the underprivileged race.

how much time could a slave really devote to learning the Scripture? especially if he had to deal with the type of scum nat turner had to deal with. he was a freedom fighter in every sense of the word.

Disappointing and over hyped. Adds nothing to the canon of American History in cinema.
