Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter lead an all-star cast in this critically acclaimed tale of life, love and chance. Jilted by her boyfriend, Renata (Holly Hunter), the oldest daughter of a close-knit Italian-American family, falls in love with Sam (Richard Dreyfuss), an abrasive and forcefully charming businessman. But neither her spirited sister (Laura San Giacomo), her down-to-earth father (Danny Aiello), or her supportive mother (Gena Rowlands) can tolerate Sam's often obnoxious intrusion into their family circle. Aggressive and overwhelmingly generous, Sam proceeds - with only the best intentions - to disrupt and nearly demolish Renata's family. Love, humor and forgiveness go once more around as the Bellas try to balance Renata's happiness with their family's survival in this funny and often touching story, directed by Lasse Hallstr̲m.

Found this older DVD on dashboard, thank you patrons. Danny Aiello excellent in his role and great singer. Did Holly Hunter really do the skating if so she was great? Richard Dreyfus excellent in his role. He really put the family in turmoil with his generosity. Hollywood hardly ever shows some one working to support the millionaire life style. All they do is play, eat and drink. Love those Italians. The last two movies I watched with Richard Dreyfus had the same kind of ending which i won't spoil for the viewers.

Lasse Hallstrom is one of my all-time favorite directors and this was one of his I hadn't seen. It's an odd little film with a stellar cast, but doesn't quite hold up to his later (and earlier) wonderful films. It does have its moments, though, including a lovely speech by Holly Hunter's character where she states definitively that this is her "adventure" and that, finally, her family's opinions about her life weren't as important as her own feelings. But overall, I felt like something was just a little off with this one. By the end, I had warmed to it a bit, though, and started to feel for the characters and their difficult relationships deeply enough.
