The writing for this movie may be the most imaginative that I've ever encountered. I watched it years ago then recently read the "Orchid Thief" and then rewatched this movie. It really helps to read the book to recognize where facts and embellishment by the screen writer part paths. I can see myself watching this again. It's very mentally stimulating if you have read the book but perhaps a little confusing if you haven't.

So creative!! I love the way the stories are woven together.

Make mine meta! For all their importance, the screenwriter doesn't get much respect in Hollywood (also see: "Barton Fink"). Charlie Kaufman, who also wrote "Being John Malkovich" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," is the rare example of the screenwriter as auteur and, while this isn't his best movie, it's maybe his most representative. It gets a little too self-reflexive and meta for my tastes, collapsing in on itself like a house of cards in a house of mirrors. Cage is ok, but miscast, Cooper deservedly won an Oscar and Streep is actually acting instead of impersonating. I have no idea how Kaufman has never won best original screenplay. Directed by Spike Jonze.

If you're expecting a fairly close adaptation of the book THE ORCHID THIEF then you'll be sorely disappointed.
Not that the cinema is poor - it's fair - but just not faithful to the book at all.

I prefer watching Streep playing a cold-hearted selfish bitch to a warm-hearted tearful godness. Cage did a good job playing the double roles. It took me a half hour to get interested in the story.

It is worth seeing just for Chris Cooper's performance. I liked a lot it for the first three-quarters, then inot so much when it degenerated into a typical Hollywood situation,( although that is part of the screenwriter's point.)

Some of the lines were deep and affection to me.

this movie is unusual and held my attention for the first half but then began to remind me of series TV when by the 3rd season the plots begin to get more and more absurd. It has great stars and I had a lot of hope that it was going to be a Hollywood movie that I could enjoy, but sadly not.

Charlie Kaufmann's "8½". How to write a script about writing a script, while writing a script adapting a novel that cannot be adapted into a film. Brilliant, and easily the best work Nicholas Cage has ever done.

Streep and Cage were great, but the best was Chris Cooper playing the orchid hunter. Very clever screenplay.

This film is so self aware. When watching the film, the viewer becomes very aware that the story is about the process by which the film we are watching was made... but not really. It's a fictional story about the process of adapting a book about orchid's into a film, and the film IS that story. Sound confusing? don't worry, it becomes clear very quickly, but more importantly the story is nowhere near as important as the characters and their lives. The movie is really about them not anything else. Yes, it's very convoluted and awesome!

4 stars for that, and 4 stars for Nic Cage, Meryl Streep, and Chris Cooper. Honorable mention goes to Brian Cox. When Cox's character tells Charlies (Cage) "No cheating" you can actually see how the writes don't cheat to finish the movie.
