Very intriguing idea and story line.. but the ending kind of fizzled out. It was a lot of build up to a poor ending.

I was excited to read this but about halfway through the book, the plot and the characters seemed to both explode and shrink, and I couldn't get a handle on who was who or where the plot was going because all the drama had been sucked out. I think you could skip this one.

I was excited to read the The possessions, it seemed like an amazing concept for the novel but it just fell flat as much as I wanted to like it. It took a turn for the boring when the concept would have lead to a very interesting story line. I found the central character flat and boring and to be honest I found her story to be so basic and vapid. They built up the idea of such a haunting past which lead to her running to the Elysian Society but when they actually revealed her "haunting past" it was not as big of a wow factor as they lead us to believe. More importantly the whole story line involving her romance with her client also did not arouse my interests. The story had potential but overall I was disappointed, very lack luster.

The Possessions, the literary debut by Sara Flannery Murphy, felt like a mix between a paranormal thriller, a domestic thriller, fantasy, and a science fiction novel. Something about it was very “other worldly”. Something about it was very dark. I may not know how to categorize this book, but one thing is for sure, I was unable to put this novel down.

I loved the beginning of this novel; I was completely engrossed in this completely original plot. The novel opens with Edie preparing for her client. She painstakingly applies lipstick. A colour she would never wear; a colour that Patrick Braddock’s wife, Sylvia, wore often. When she was alive. After meeting Patrick, she becomes obsessed with Sylvia and Patrick’s relationship. Is she falling in love with Patrick? Is Sylvia trying to take over? Who is in control? As these lines blur, another mystery of a murdered woman has a connection to Edie.

I did find that the middle of this novel dragged a bit, but the momentum did pick up nearing the end and all of the novel’s mysteries come tumbling together, weaving an intricate story and calling on Greek mythology to create an electrifying conclusion.

If you are a fan of a novel that will quicken your heart rate with a paranormal twist, you will love The Possessions.
