(NOTE: I listened to the audio book on Audible.)

Something's up with Ethan Wate. Nothing is the same as it once was --- his attitude, his relationships, even his tastebuds! But one things is back to normal, or as normal as it ever was for a caster girl & a mortal boy to be girlfried/boyfried. Ethan helped pull Lena back from her destructive ways just a few months prior. Now it's Lena's turn to help discover what's going on with Ethan. Lena, Ethan, & their faithful sidekicks Link, Liv, John Breed, & even Ridley spend much of the book trying to discover how to restore the order of things. They are told that the only person that can restore the order is "the one who is two". But who is that? In the last moments of the story, Ethan uncovers the truth & must take bold action. Ends on a cliffhanger.

This may be my favorite book of the series simply because it has so many connecting parts to the bigger story. Several things have happened in the previous 2 books that contribute to the mystery problem in book 3. So far, all of the corrective actions to solve a problem have solved one aspect of the problem but brought on a new problem to solve. The corrective action taken at the end of this book left me wondering how this new problem could possibly be resolved. Or is this going to be a series that has one of those good, but not a "feel good" ending? The final book in the series, book 4, should give us the answers we seek!

Age recommendation: 14 & up (spiritual elements, death)

On a scale of 1-10 stars, I give it 8.

I have issues when it comes to books that seem to stretch on and on in the series. Major issues. This is why I struggled getting through this book and the last one. I absolutely hate it when authors don't meet their expectations for the consecutive books after the first, major ones. Maybe ones standards should be lowered before reading, which I suppose is the only method of enjoying all books. But here, Lena and Ethan just seem like two characters thrown into too many situations with too many similar ideas. Beautiful Creatures was good, but the concepts started mashing around afterwards. It wasn't so much as a decline, but a steady graph with a line that just kept at its flat rate. Ethan and Lena became so much more predictable at times, and not at others, that it just got distracting.

The ending of Beautiful Darkness was amazing in my opinion, considering that I didn’t find that book to be very entertaining. Beautiful Chaos picks up with Ethan and Lena finally back together! Now that Lena has claimed herself and destroyed the order of things strange and unthinkable things are occurring. Lena’s claiming has impacted the supernatural powers of her family as well as the mortal world. Once again Ethan is experiencing these random visions or dreams that haunt him. He must uncover the meanings. He is gradually losing parts of himself, like memories, names, taste buds and more! We find out that Link has become an incubus after John Breed bit him. We also get to see how Ridley will behave herself now that she is no longer a dark caster. As an interesting twist we get to see Sarafine’s perspective in flashbacks.
Beautiful Chaos reminds me why I love this series so much! You really get to see how these characters adapt to change, as well as how they react to threats from their enemies, as they are constantly defending themselves and the people they care for. I absolutely loved to read about the relationship between Link and Ridley, since they both experienced a massive lifestyle change. In addition I was interested in seeing how Liv would interact with everyone now that Lena is back in the picture. Beautiful Chaos is jam packed with love, loss, fear and strength. I strongly recommend that you read Beautiful Chaos, even if you weren’t impressed with Beautiful Darkness.

This series is pretty fast paced, but I admit it lags a bit... when your relationship to a spellcaster is killing you, and you don't save yourself (something to do with the sapping nature of touching each other, even innocently)... it only makes sense that you are a teen aged boy. I like that this series is obviously meant for a female audience, but the main character and the mindset is male. No spoiler alert here, but this one was a tear-jerker, not sure what'll happen in the next volume.

I like the idea of these books, but the plot has just been dragged on too long. The first book was amazing, but even then I found that the writing style was poor. I find myself having to take breaks in between sections so I can actually get through it
