If I wanted to be massively depressed I'd simply pick up the daily newspaper for free. I got to p. 28 and didn't want any more. Perhaps it hits too close to the mark for me (past history with an eating disorder). On the positive, it appeared to be very well written, I simply couldn't go on. I also steered my teen daughter away from it.
Although The Art of Starving won an award for extraordinary science fiction, I perceived the work more as realistic fiction and that the magical elements were hallucinatory or imaginary, but I suppose that was intentionally ambiguous. The audiobook version is well-read and recommended for readers age 14+.
I really liked this book! For me this book clearly showed how Matt's anorexia is directly related to his feeling powerless. Not only does he gain power over a portion of his life but he also gains a few extra powers that most people don't have. Quick read and I loved book format with the rules!
