I love watching Ryan Higa's YouTube channel because he always makes me laugh. This book made me laugh as well, although it's mostly serious. It's definitely intended more for older kids and teens, but I still think it was a good read. I still find I can relate to him because I'm the same age as him.

Anyway, this book really shows how even a kid with a pretty normal life can have suicidal thoughts because of bullying and Higa shows how he overcame it by turning to comedy and videoing. There were some things I thought he could have explained a bit more because the end seemed a bit rushed ... such as how his relationship with his parents and brother changed. I also felt really anxious reading about him trying to lose 16 pounds. Eating half a can of tuna a day! Seriously!! A growing high school boy?!?! It freaked me out that high school kids would do that just for wrestling. He did mention that it was dangerous and stupid, but at the same time, said it was good for him because it proved that he could set a goal and reach it. Which sounds good, but it makes me cringe that that was his goal and I'm not sure it's really a good example.

He writes the book in such a way that makes it seem to be about how to write a book, but it is a memoir. There are a lot of illustrations, like a graphic novel, which are usually pretty funny. I think it was cleverly done and I hope he becomes a Best Sailing Author someday.

If you want to check out his YouTube channel, search "nigahiga" or "how to be ninja".
