The story of the remarkable resurgence of right-wing extremists in the United States

Just as Donald Trump’s victorious campaign for the US presidency shocked the world, the seemingly sudden national prominence of white supremacists, xenophobes, militia leaders, and mysterious “alt-right” figures mystifies many. But the American extreme right has been growing steadily in number and influence since the 1990s with the rise of patriot militias. Following 9/11, conspiracy theorists found fresh life; and in virulent reaction to the first black US president, militant racists have come out of the woodwork. Nurtured by a powerful right-wing media sector in radio, TV, and online, the far right, Tea Party movement conservatives, and Republican activists found common ground. Figures such as Stephen Bannon, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Alex Jones, once rightly dismissed as cranks, now haunt the reports of mainstream journalism.

Investigative reporter David Neiwert has been tracking extremists for more than two decades. In Alt-America, he provides a deeply researched and authoritative report on the growth of fascism and far-right terrorism, the violence of which in the last decade has surpassed anything inspired by Islamist or other ideologies in the United States. The product of years of reportage, and including the most in-depth investigation of Trump’s ties to the far right, this is a crucial book about one of the most disturbing aspects of American society.

Baker & Taylor
Delves into recent American history to explain the sudden prominence of white supremacists, xenophobes, and "Alt-Right" leaders in the wake of the election of President Trump.

Book News
Journalist Neiwert dives into the Alt-Right netherworld, examining its origins and alarming resurgence with the election of Trump. From the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing to 2016's Malhuer Wildlife Refuge occupation, Neiwert traces the convergence of disparate groups into one entity now known as the Alt-Right. The reader also sees the unfortunate consequences of Trump's hate rhetoric, as these groups now have a vessel in the White House. The text ends with a warning, the next logical step for these groups is the step into fascism; Neiwert's hope is that if we know our enemy, we can fight it. This book has some big words and subtle definitions, but overall the story should prove convincing and informative for all who wonder what makes America great again for Trump supporters. The epigraph tells you what this book is about: “Trust, a mighty god is gone…and men no longer recognize the rules of conduct or acts of piety” once Pandora’s box has been opened. In David Niewert’s contemporary history, the election of Donald Trump opened the box, loosing the evils of nativism, racism, and authoritarianism on the United States. His 2016 win didn’t create the alt-right; it gave them legitimacy and mainstream relevance. In the bizarro worldview of Alt-America, conspiracy theories distort their relationship to government and society. Led by conspiracy theorists and race-baiters, these folks believe that there’s a New World Order that wants to subjugate American citizens. Immigration is a takeover by the lesser races. They think that the U.S. Constitution establishes the county sheriff as the supreme law enforcement officer, but it does not provide any basis for the federal government to own land. The federal government is an enemy-controlled force, to be resisted whether the policy addresses racial equality or gun control or public-land management. The global elites behind this plot are so clever that they stage “false flag operations,” government-orchestrated and controlled events to discredit the truthful views of Alt-America. A final chapter, “The Aftermath: Fascism and our Future,” provides a summation and explains how mainstream America can respond to this threat in a sensible way.

I present you with Exhibit A in the scamming of America!
Please note the extraordinary similarity between the two books, Alt-America here, and Among the Truthers, by Jonathan Kay and also what the authors repeat in their media interviews - - amazing! ! !
Kay, a fellow with the rightwing bunch, the Foundation in Defense of Democracies - - the successor to PNAC or Project for a New American Century - - calls anyone who questions the government or the CorporateMedia or Wall Street a crazy conspiracy theorist.
Meanwhile, David Neiwert, the author of Alt-America, and an investigative journalist for the Southern Poverty Law Center [which has between $100 million to $200 million parked offshore], calls anyone who questions the government or the CorporateMedia or Wall Street a white supremacist/crazy conspiracy theorist!
Both describe the members of the 9/11 Truth Movement in this manner?!?!
So the rightwing Foundation in Defense of Democracies and the pseudo-liberal SPLC [legally a non-profit, but financially structured as a hedge fund] sound exactly alike and are pursuing the same agenda?
Sure looks to be the case. This should be food for serious thought.
[By all means read this book - - but be sure to also read Kay's pile of drivel, Among the Truthers, to note the similarity in thought and tone - - and if you really want to experience Deep Propaganda, be sure to read the Warren Commission Report.]
***And please never forget that under President Obama, it is now legal, for the first time in US history, for the government to officially propagandize the citizenry - - that is, individuals and agencies within the American gov't can access government funds to propagandize the people. Now why would anyone ever suspect anyone in the US government of anything?!

@Leonadas23, as a lifelong leftie I am personally getting sick and tired of this current trend (for lack of a better phrase) of the fair weather, wine and cheese left accusing anyone and everyone who says something that does not conform 100% with the mainstream Democratic party hive mind of literally being a Nazi who needs to be got rid of. Please knock it off, its embarrassing for everyone on the legit, sincere left. No one needs to be got rid of, no one needs to be silenced. Stargladiator may be pompous, at times irritating and he/she may go on bizarre tangents, but Stargladiator in not a living anachronism from the 1930s, that's ridiculous. That being said, I am interested in the subject of this book (whatever the author's agenda) and would sincerely like to UNDERSTAND the average Trump supporter, not just roll my eyes and make a snarky comment that does nothing to serve the community and everything to serve the eye rollers narcissism.

Seems we have a Neo Nazi leaving idiotic tags on this book. Is there a moderator or someone who regulates this site?
