P Is for Pterodactyl

The Worst Alphabet Book Ever

Turning the traditional idea of an alphabet book on its head, P is for Pterodactyl is perfect for anyone who has ever been stumped by silent letters or confused by absurd homophones. This whimsical, unique book takes silent letter entries like "K is for Knight" a step further with "The noble knight's knife nicked the knave's knee." Lively illustrations provide context clues, and alliterative words help readers navigate text like "a bright white gnat is gnawing on my gnocchi" with ease. Everyone from early learners to grown-up grammarians will love this wacky book where "A is for Aisle" but "Y is definitely not for Why.".

I, my 9-year-old daughter, and my husband (whose first language isn't English) all shared a chuckle over this work highlighting some of the goofier aspects of English pronunciation.

Silent letters can be mischievous! (Note: there's a glossary in the back to help you out with pronouncing them.)

Any alphabet book that includes the word gnocchi gets a thumbs up from me!

If EWE are a person who loves words and puns and YOU want to confuse young readers, then look in the book AISLE, for this book. OUI, OUI!

I love using this in an A-B-C story time. Paired with a classic ABC book, P is for Pterodactyl perfect!

Some of the words are really hard, so practice a few times before diving in. The guide in the back is a life saver (especially for a Dyslexic such as myself). If you want to use this in a teaching setting, ask kids and caregivers words they know that don't follow the usual language rule.

Kids and caregivers who love puns and wordplay will enjoy this book that focuses on those pesky rebels of the alphabet: silent letters.
