Fans of Hinton's young adult works will probably be disappointed by her first foray into adult fiction. A vampire novel, Hawkes Harbour goes to a much darker place in comparison to many modern vampire books. The unmitigated horrors experienced by the worse-for-wear protagonist, Jamie, will likely turn off many readers. Then just when it gets good, it gets terrible again (for Jamie).
It took me a while to get into this book (about halfway through, actually), and I'm not sure it was worth the tiny payoff of knowing the ending.
