The midnighters series is easily a favorite. The concept and execution are both very original and Westerfeld clearly did his homework when writing the series. The monsters and the secret hour are both original on their own, but Westerfeld's take on his characters' "powers" are probably some of the more unique ideas I've seen in a while. Even psychic Melissa, who has the most familiar powerset of the group, experiences her telepathy differently than you generally see in fiction. The characters all feel real and fleshed out, behaving with their own interests and priorities in mind. Their personalities are well developed and their conflicts feel natural because of it. This makes their working together all the more interesting, as their personalities clash and align with the story.
