This is absolutely the Emperor's New Clothes of movies. If you don't like it, it's because you aren't smart enough, of hip enough, or whatever. Well, I thought it was lousy when I saw it in the '70s, and it hasn't improved with age. Just because something is 'dark' it isn't necessarily 'deep'. Maybe it's a true-to-life glimpse of the world as represented by New York, and the angst felt by those who feel isolated and blah blah blah, but it is also a lousy movie. Maybe Scorsese, DeNiro, Jodie Foster and Cybill Shepherd could do better now that they have more experience, but this movie is sadly overrated. And yeah, I'm talkin' to you.
