Being an amateur student of Marie Antoinette, I have to admit I was quite alarmed when I heard about this particular movie verson of her life. Marie Antionetted as rock star? Well, my misgivings were for naught because Coppala creates a visual masterpiece. Kirsten Dunst does an excellent job of playing the doomed Queen when she was in her element as the hostess of Versailles, and most famous Queen of her day. She was a celebrity in the way we know it today. But celebrity also has it's drawbacks as Marie found out late in the movie when the French public were creating the most outrageous lies about her. While this is not as good as the Antonia Fraser book the movie was based on, it did a credible job of portraying Marie Antoinette as a somewhat spoiled child having a great time.....until political events forced her to grow up. I hope for a sequal to this movie which deals with what happens after Versailles is stormed by the mob. Recommended viewing.
