In 1987, 1988, when this music was new, it was the cat's pyjamas, or so it seemed at the time, as I jumped up and down on a trampoline whilst listening to smug Natalie Merchant tell off the entire world. In 2012, by contrast, one can hear with absolute clarity what attitudinizing trash this is. Some of the guitar work is fun; only "Hey, Jack Kerouac" holds up well, with maybe "City of Angels" rating a partial success. In retrospect, it's a wonder that a mean-spirited frumpy counterfeit Boheme and her fellas ever got anywhere. But it was a different era, and the world was a different place then. By the way, Merchant's duet with Stipe is a total disaster. There -- I've said it.
