I really enjoy Patricia Wrede's writing, particularly the strong female protagonist. The men are neither all love interests, nor all stupid or villains. Relationships develop organically with each person working to attain their own destiny. In some of the books, they end up falling in love, in others, they are colleagues. The main character here has always struggled with her magical abilities and thought she was "bad" at magic. The story hints that her magic is very powerful, but different from what is taught in her school. (I think of my own children who are very kinesthetic in learning style who struggle to sit through a regular school class.) I enjoy the juxtaposition of the "old west" with magic. The magical creatures that are still being discovered on the North American continent are well described.
