Pretty typical YA book - high school scenes, lack of parental interaction, and love between a girl and her best friend. The world building for Everneath, the place between Hell and Earth where immortal beings live and feed on humans to renew their years, was interesting and the concept is unique. What really lost me was the pacing of the book and what frustrated me was the lack of emotion. Our "heroine" Nikki returns, from being fed on in Everneath, to make amends with her family and friends. However she does NONE of this in the book. She spends little time with her father, brother, or friend Jules. She believes that she has 6 months left with these people that she supposedly cares about but does nothing to rebuild those relationships. On top of that, no side characters really stand out. The pace picks up in the last half of the book and some interesting myths are mentioned and I wish this had been incorporated throughout the book more.
