My one complaint with this book that I had planned on mentioning here was how rushed and somewhat unsatisfying the ending scene was. But then I realized, the real reason I wasn't fond of it was because it meant the end of the book. Which meant the end of the Artemis Fowl series. Which meant no more adventures with Artemis, Holly, Butler, and the rest. I loved this series. The main characters are nothing but stellar, painted in such bright hues on the page and possessing such deeply-rooted character growth that surpasses titles normally found in the children's section. It's superb. Artemis Fowl is a phenomenal character, growing and changing from the events of every single title in the series. Holly Short and Butler are equally engaging and effective characters. Other faces that dance on and off the pages, including Mulch Diggums, Foaly, and others are just as colorful and interesting. In my opinion, these characters make the story. However, Colfer's writing style is not to be shortchanged. His dialogue, his descriptions, his wit and humor...are fantastic. The Last Guardian was no exception. While this book in particular isn't my favorite in the series, it was a fitting end to the story. Artemis and Holly's friendship was culminated in a heartbreaking scene, and Butler went full circle as Artemis's bodyguard and friend. When I look back, I could point out some scenes that seemed borderline ridiculous (monster crickets, anyone?), and a few characters either weren't given enough page time or simply disappeared from the scenes altogether. And that ending...it fit but I wanted so much more. I wanted to see all the after effects from the ending, with every single main character. But I guess I'll have to leave that up to the imagination or fanfiction. In the end, the Artemis Fowl series is nothing but excellence. Dynamic for the children's genre, and definitely worth the read.
