This is only the second Stephen King book I've ever read (Bag of Bones being the first) and it was truly one of the best books I've read in a long time. It had that cozy mystery feel to it- one of those themed ones where the protagonist teaches you something and then goes on to solve a murder. It read quickly, had interesting characters and a little bit of behind the scenes amusement park action too. I thought perhaps that with the novel being set in 1973 I would find it difficult to relate to the time period- but with a few minor detail changes the story could have just as well have been set in the current decade. King has a way of writing that makes me want to keep going- to finish the book in one sitting. I'd recommend this to anyone who's looking for a quick beach read, or someone who's new to King and doesn't want to commit to one of his doorstop novels quite yet. I almost wish there was more about Joyland here- I would have loved to learn more about the rides and the shys. All in all, highly recommended.
