I give up at 50%. I can't go on listening to Blanche do this and Blanche care about this or not care about this, whatever the case may be. Sure there is a murder, and it's of a fascinating sounding woman who gets thrown in prison for wearing men's clothing, who hunts frogs for a living and rides a penny farthing, that she stole. But do we get to learn anything about her?? Nope, not much. Just Blanche's rather minuscule observations of what she considers her bad attitude and behaviour. And holy Hanna, but I don't care about the baby, I don't care whether Blanche is a good or bad mother and I don't care about her complicated feelings for her child, how the hell did a historical fiction book about the murder of a cross dressing, frog hunting, bicycle riding woman turn into a book about a french circus performer turned whore's child rearing abilities. So I'm done, curiosity about the ending be damned, I've got better books to read.
