ED WOOD is a very strange movie and I mean that in the best of ways. It shows comedic quirk, sometimes dark and other times light, and it takes a certain kind of sense of humour to enjoy this kind of film, but legions of Burton fans (as well as film fans in general) find it remarkable. It took me more than one go to enjoy ED WOOD. My first try found me close-minded to it, leaving me ill-prepared to get past the first fifteen. But with a decent all-star cast, a great script (about filmmaking itself), and a truly remarkable story about a man who is far from normal himself and found success in his, shall we say, individual way. ED WOOD is not a difficult film to watch either. It's very entertaining, as well as somewhat informative (although some facts in this biopic are smudged). In a few years, I'll rewatch it again and likely pick up on more comedy that I missed on the first run. The black and white film is pretty essential, setting the mood just so, and, the art direction and set dressing surpasses the fantastical Burtonesque bar. It's pretty impressive how they show certain scenes in this biopic and how close they look to the scenes in his actual films, such as PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. I highly recommend this film to virtually all film lovers, as ED WOOD is a tale about a man, despite all his idiosyncrasies, loved film, too.
