I am new to the Monk books although I have read many of her Charlotte and Thomas Pitt stories, and I did read the first Monk book. In Revenge in a Cold River I did not recognise many of the regular characters but the excellent characterization and subtle guidance let me keep up. I like all the characters and was fooled by a couple of the red herrings: a good rule of thumb for my appreciating a mystery. I thought the trial scene at the end went on a little too long and also thought the grounds for arrest were awfully flimsy, but I'm totally ignorant of the 19th century English legal system. I especially liked the vivid description of the city and its customs 1870s. A good read.
