I knew nothing about Bohjalian or this novel before picking it up. It's not bad. Despite the fact that the characterization and dialogue aren't really very good -- and important elements of the plot are wildly implausible (particularly the book's central premise, which involves the now-discredited notion of memory-suppression) -- the book is engrossing and even, at times, moving. It helps to have at least a Coles Notes understanding of The Great Gatsby.
